Or should I say Eataly! We arrived in Italy on July 4th and we've been eating ever since! In Rome, aside from seeing some amazing sites, like the Colosseum, the Pantheon, the Roman Forum, the Vatican, and the Trevi Fountain (and also happening upon the set of Kevin Spacey's new movie "All the Money in the World"), we sampled amazing pastas and pizzas, including an excellent pasta dish at Eataly, which is a store based off the slow food movement. In Florence we visited the Central Market and sampled fresh olives and candied fruits. My non-vegetarian traveling companions also ate some "must try" local fair: lampredotto, which is a sandwich made from the fourth stomach of a cow and cinghiali, a wild boar sauce served over pasta (both were reported to be delicious). Of course, we also grabbed a gelato while we strolled across Ponte Veccio. On the way to Milan today we stopped off at the Gelato Museum in Bologna, and while sampling some of the best gelato I've ever had (pistachio, which also turns out to be the most popular flavor of gelato), we learned about its history and the proper way to make it.
This afternoon we finally arrived in Milan and the Youth Leadership Summit on Food Sustainability. Steven Ritz (teacher and author of "The Power of a Plant") kicked off the event with an inspirational talk on creating equal access to food and effecting change in the world. We also found out today that the student group (our students are divided into teams with hundreds of other students from around the US and the world) with the best idea on food sustainability will have it entered into the Nobel Museum. The energy is high and everyone's ready to get started!
